2. Achieving Your Goals

Goals are dreams with deadlines.
- Diana Scharf

Setting and Reaching Goals

Goals help you find purpose, focus, and control in life. They must be personal, motivating, specific, measurable, and shared.

Goal Setting Steps

Step 1: Prepare Your Goal List

  • Grab several sheets of lined paper and make two columns on each by drawing a line down the center.
  • Label the first column “Goals” and the second column “Time Frame (in years).”
  • Start listing your goals in the first column, numbering from 1 to 250. If you need more ideas, take a break and come back to it later. This might take you a few days or even a couple of weeks.

Step 2: Set Deadlines

  • In the second column, next to each goal, write down when you hope to achieve it (for example, in 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years).

Step 3: Choose Your Focus

  • Pick one or two goals you especially want to achieve in the next year.

Step 4: Consider the Stakes

For each goal you’ve chosen, think about and write down:

  • What will you lose if you don’t achieve this goal?
  • What will you gain if you do achieve it?

Step 5: Plan Your Steps

  • Break down your chosen goals into smaller steps. Think about what you need to do in the next six months, three months, 30 days, and even daily to make progress.

Step 6: Find Your Accountability Partner

  • Decide who will help keep you on track with your goals. Who will check in with you to make sure you’re following through?

3. Overcoming Obstacles

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
- Wayne Gretzky

Facing Challenges

Achieving goals requires courage and discipline. Identify your main obstacles and create an action plan to overcome them, such as improving skills or habits.

Rate the following obstacles or create your own:

  • Fear - Rate between 1-10
  • Poor self-esteem - Rate between 1-10
  • Negative habits - Rate between 1-10
  • Lack of skills - Rate between 1-10
  • Poor self-discipline - Rate between 1-10
  • Poor time management - Rate between 1-10

Now that you have identified your obstacles, identify the how are you going to overcome them? Do you need to upskill? Do you need coaching?

4. Conquering Fear

Fear does not prevent death. It prevents life.
- Naguib Mahfouz

Understanding and Overcoming Fear

Fear should be seen as a message, not an enemy. To overcome fear, identify its origin, understand your reactions, and make a conscious choice to respond differently.

Top Three Fears

  • Being turned away by others [rejection].
  • Fear of either success or failure.
  • Fear of conflict.

Five Steps to Overcome Fear

  • Identify and jot down the specific incident that sparked your fear. Spend time pondering over it to pinpoint its origin.
  • Record how you felt during that incident. Note down your feelings.
  • Notice when you find yourself reacting in the same way to current situations as you did to that past incident.
  • Understand how that past event is linked to your current worries.
  • Decide how you will handle similar situations moving forward. Changing habits might be hard and feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s crucial for getting rid of outdated fears.

Tactics to Combat Fear

Fear is a learned emotion, so it can be unlearned. Unlearn fear by revisiting its origin and changing your narrative. Keep a journal, celebrate successes, stay informed, care for your physical health, and ensure you have fun.

Strategies to Combat Fear:

  • Write in a journal every day. Note down what scares you and try to figure out where these fears come from. Change the story of past events with positive affirmations and mental images.
  • Celebrate your victories, no matter how small, every day.
  • Read regularly. It could be something to help with your goals or just for fun.
  • Look after your health. Exercise often and eat well.
  • Make time for activities you love each week.

Evaluate your readiness to change in line with your goals. Each goal comes with benefits and costs. List the goals you’re aiming for, then for each, note the benefits of achieving it and the costs involved. Ask yourself if the benefits outweigh the costs.

6. Transforming Relationships

Be the change you wish to see in your relationship.
- Inspired by the famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi

Improving Relationships

Healthy relationships require skill and willingness to improve. Assess your readiness and willingness to enhance your relationship skills.

Key to Better Relationships

At the heart of everything we do is our inner self, which deeply influences how we interact with others. Here are three essential rules for any relationship:

  • A relationship can only be as strong as the commitment of both people involved.
  • Building a relationship requires specific abilities beyond just having good intentions.
  • Improving your own relationship skills is the first step towards healthier interactions.

Consider these questions about your relationships:

  • Which relationships are you focused on improving?
  • How ready are you to work on making these relationships better?
  • Is the other person also willing to make improvements?

Evaluate how good you are at these relationship skills, rating yourself from 1 (needing improvement) to 10 (excelling):

  • Your ability to handle emotions responsibly.
  • Your capability to own up to what’s happening.
  • How straightforward you are in communication.
  • Your fairness in resolving conflicts.
  • Your effort to care and support.

7. Finding Balance and Power

Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.
- Jana Kingsford

Finding Balance and Inner Strength

Power and force are not the same. Force is about controlling others to do what we want, coming from outside influence. True power is internal and starts with being balanced.

  • What are your five most important goals or values?
  • How much focus are you giving to each of these priorities?
  • Is this focus adequate?
  • Are you concentrating on just a few priorities and neglecting the rest?
  • How can you adjust the time and effort you dedicate to each priority?

8. The Spiritual Path

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Embracing Spirituality

Spirituality is about seeing beyond ourselves and loving universally. Reflect on what’s enough, acceptance, and the basis of your security to foster a healthy spiritual life.

Spirituality is based on three main ideas

  • Recognizing we’re part of something bigger.
  • Learning to find peace with what we can’t change, courage to change what we can, and wisdom to know the difference.
  • Believing in the power of universal love.

Key Spiritual Questions

  • When do you feel you have enough?
  • What does it take for you to feel satisfied?
  • When do you consider something good enough?
  • How perfect do things need to be for you?
  • Who do you need to be to accept and like yourself?
  • Where do you need to be to find happiness?
  • What do you base your security on?
  • Can you accept your current life?

Signs of Healthy Spirituality

  • Trusting others and yourself.
  • Letting go when needed.
  • Being open to connecting with others.
  • Allowing yourself to show vulnerability.
  • Celebrating life’s moments.

If you’re struggling in any spiritual area, it might stem from

  • Being criticised or compared to others.
  • Growing up where your emotions weren’t valued.
  • Having emotionally distant caregivers.
  • Living under strict or no rules.
  • Being judged solely on your achievements.
  • Being in an environment where physical affection was unsafe.
  • Experiencing shame about your body or living in poverty.

9. Persisting Towards Goals

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
- Confucius
